Napoleon’s Triumph: studying the map

A sample section of the map is broken down and explained.

Locale

Unlike most wargames, which use a hexagonal grid to regulate the positioning and movement of the pieces, Napoleon’s Triumph uses irregular polygons of varying shapes and sizes, according to the terrain at each location. Most wargames also use a terrain effects table to indicate the effects of terrain on movement and combat, but in Napoleon’s Triumph, terrain effects are indicated on the map itself.

To show how this unique system works, the section of the map shown on the left will be broken down and explained in the graphics below:

The map is divided into polygons, each of which is called a locale. Each face of a locale polygon is called an approach. The example shows a locale with three approaches.

Approaches

The number in the center of each locale is its capacity. The capacity of a locale is the number of units that can occupy it. Only one side can occupy a given locale at any one time.

Capacity

The symbols Infantry Penalty,Cavalry Penalty,and Artillery Penalty are attack penalties for infantry, cavalry, and artillery respectively. The symbols Obstructed and Impassible indicate obstructed and impassable terrain.

Penalties

The brown lines in the example are roads. Pieces can normally only move one locale a single turn, but they can move up to three locales in a turn when following roads.

The symbols shown below are decoration. They have no effect on play — the effects of the terrain they represent is factored into the sizes and shapes of the locales and their approach penalties.

The original example is re-assembled. Note the penalties on both sides of the approaches. The penalites inside a locale are for attacks into (not out of) that locale.
